Story and photo by Skip Rither
One spring weekend we took the train from Samsun to Amasya. We stayed at the Cinar Oteli. One day we rented a carriage and traveled a short distance from the city to see some Byzantine tombs and visit the apple orchards. The little town had seen very few Americans and it seemed like all of the men and boys in town came out to see what an American looked like. A small band of musicians appeared with a drum and a couple of clarinets. They started playing and the crowd started dancing. They insisted that we join in and so we did. When the musicians stopped playing, the drummer carefully tipped the drum on its side and the people started placing coins on the drum head. We left several 10TL bills on the drum. We had a great time. I am second from the left and the fifth guy from the left is Smitty who was also a member of Dog trick. His last name was Smith but I can't remember his first name. |

The Black Boat and the White Boat. The White Boat brought mail
and supplies to Samsun during
the late 50s and early 60s. By the time I was there in 1967, mail came by air.
Thanks to Dave Matteson for this photo.
