Skytop, USAF Language School

Syracuse University

Background

During the 60s and 70s, the United States Air Force operated a language school, primarily for Russian and other Slavic languages, on a hill top base near Syracuse University. It was an intensive program, taught by native speakers, and solely for military personnel.

I'm George Campbell, and  attended the school during 1966 and 1967, as part of the Russian Language Class 9-3-66B, going on from there to Goodfellow AFB, then TUSLOG Det. 3-2 in Samsun, Turkey, and then to Ft. George Meade in Maryland.

I have only a few photos from those days, and hope that others who have photos and memories will contact me by email, using one of the links above. I'll be happy to post your photos and memories.

Assistance Wanted: Paul O'Leary, who was at Skytop, in the Russian program, during 1966-67, but did not complete the course, is seeking information that will demonstrate that he was in the program at one point. He needs this information to document his attendance through part of the program. Apparently, official records are not available. If you knew or remember Paul O'Leary, please click here to Email him. I'm sure he would appreciate it very much.

Skytop. A view from the ski slopes above the installation. The brick dorms on the left, and
classrooms on the right. At the rear is the married student housing for Syracuse U. We called
it the "baby factory."

Skytop. A recent photograph. It doesn't look the same at all, does it. All that's left are our memories, it seems. Photo courtesy of Frank Henderson, Class 12-13-52.

Part of Basic Russian class 9-3-66B. If anyone knows the names of these folks, please let me know.
I'm afraid I've forgotten them. (Old age, you know.) Update: I have heard from Harold Baker, from 9-3-66B, and
he has new information. Bottom row, from left: Joe Price, Pete Moran, Pete Studer, ?Michael Mathiesen?. Top row, from left, Jay Bowers, John Carey, Dave Martin, Eddie Bauer, Tom Henry, and Dave Boeitker. Thanks, Harold!
